Reds Rolls Macowboys in Casino

The Dragons debut tour of Macau was a successful venture on the weekend. Actually, it was half the Dragons as it was the HK Reds v Macau Lightning in the SCAFL round four.

Half the Dragons or not, led by supercoach Farmer and drinking buddys Peter Richie and Paul Hart, the Dragons managed to take the lead 35 seconds into the game and never give it away.

The instructions before the game were simple – use our advantage of our elite runners to win the ball from the stoppages and keep the forward line open for Wilbur to lead into. It seemed to work as the Reds piled on 6 goals to nil in the first quarter. The coach was quite relaxed from that point and the instructions changed to Peter Richie – go and buy three beers from the bar over there!

However, the Macowboys did tighten the game up in the second quarter. The Dragons still managed four goals, but Macau kicked three. Wilbur was also slightly concussed in the second quarter, so seppo recruit Tim was moved to the forward line in his place.

The Reds were now down to one on the bench against Macau’s 25, so the issue was whether the seven goal break at half time was enough as it was stinking hot. The answer was yes, but only just. Macau piled on seven goals to one in the half and had reduced the margin to 7 points with five minutes to go. The coach was starting to get nervous and did not have a runner so politely asked Mr Richie to put down his beer and become the “runner” for five minutes. He actually was the team “walker” as he went out and made a few crucial changes in very casual fashion.

Beers, pizza and bar fines followed as the Reds kicked on into the night.

Farmer’s coaching record now stands at 3 and 0 and is significantly better at international level than the other (arguably) more qualified coaches of the Dragons.

Best players were Matt Jackson, Stuch, Woody, Brian Jackson and Mitch.

Goals: Matt Jackson 5, Woody 2, Keano 2, Stuch, Wilbur.
