2001 Season Write Up

After the non-event that was 2001, the Dragons made a resurgence under the tutelage of president Michael Robertson and super coach Simon Dixon. However, our first tour in 2002 was not a great result on the field with the Dragons losing to the Jakarta Bintangs by a fair bit.

The Dragons returned to Hong Kong, and Sunday afternoon football matches were introduced with games between members of the Dragons squad. This has proved very successful and continues to flourish today.

In August, the Dragons toured to Singapore for the Asian championships, and came away with third place, but put in a strong performance regardless.

In October we went to Bali for the Bali 9s and lost a close grand final to Jakarta in a 5 team competition, beating Ric Reddell’s super rules team from Perth, Malaysia and Bali along the way.

Bintangs reign supreme

Game two was against the Jakarta Bintangs. The Dragons were very competitive in patches throughout the game, but several easy centre clearances followed by goals gave the Bintangs a relatively simple win by 6 goals.

Match Report:

Eight minutes of infamy

After a short break, the Dragons re-entered the arena to play rivals and hosts Singapore.

A pumped up Dragons outfit was all over the Dingbats like a bad rash to stun the huge crowd. Unfortunately we were unable to turn possession into conversion and missed several easy opportunities.

A late surge by the Dingbats with two goals in the final minutes gave Singapore a narrow seven point victory. The time clock was the source of much discussion, with unofficial timekeepers suggesting the clock was left to run an extra 5-8 minutes, when the Dragons finally surrendered their lead.

All Dragons battled manfully in what was a very good effort. Special mention to Nick Hyland who destroyed former Brisbane Bear and blonde mullet poster boy Andrew Taylor. Matty Wu who bobbed up all over the field like a cork in the ocean, the brothers Rigg and the evergreen Stephen Webb who created havoc across half forward and copped a lovely head high tackle for his troubles.

The match would be long-remembered as one of the defining moments in the rivalry between these two giant of Asian football.
